What Are the System Components?

EcoCocon Panel

At the heart of our system is the EcoCocon panel–a load-bearing twin-stud timber frame panel insulated with homogenous straw infill. Panel thickness is typically 40 cm, with a 30 cm option available.

Panel Types

Panel types include standard panels, braced panels, lintels, sills, and inclined gable wall elements. Different structural demands can be met by using plywood reinforced column elements.

Box Elements

Box elements are special structural components made from timber, LVL, or GLT and insulated with wood fibre board. They are used in structurally demanding projects to carry heavy loads, bridge large spans, or connect floors.

Airtight Breather Membrane

An integral part of the system is the use of an airtight, yet vapour-permeable membrane on the exterior side of the panels. The membrane also provides weather protection during construction.

A breather membrane between the straw panel and the protective fibre board keeps the system airtight while allowing moisture to escape, preserving healthy walls.

Fast Installation

Prefabricated wall elements arrive ready to mount with screws. A team of three can build up to 60 m² daily, doubling with crane help.

Carbon Capture

Carbon Capture

Plants absorb CO₂ as they grow. That carbon remains stored in the straw and timber used in our panels. The average panel assessed in our EPD contains biogenic carbon equivalent to around 115 kg of CO₂ per m². See our EPD for details.

Fire Safety

Fire Safety

EcoCocon panels achieve an REI 45 fire resistance classification without internal finishes, with an external membrane as specified in the classification report, for fire exposure from inside. Performance depends on the wall assembly. See the report for the classified configuration and application limits.

Thermal Performance

Panels help reduce heat loss in winter and limit heat gain in summer, supporting a more stable indoor temperature.

Versatile Use

Versatile Use

The system works as load-bearing walls up to three stories or infill for taller buildings. It integrates easily with timber, steel, or concrete frames.

Wall elements are made to order in 1 mm increments, fitting almost any architectural design and creating structurally-sound, tailored straw walls.
