PROJECT OVERVIEW
Rustenburgstraat is a residential development of 89 homes in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, with the first 42 houses completed in early 2026. Commissioned by social housing provider Trudo and designed by FAAM Architects, the project replaces ageing semi-detached houses that no longer met current standards for energy performance, comfort, or ecology — while deliberately preserving the street's distinctive character.
The existing semi-detached typology is replaced by three-unit row houses that maintain the original proportions and colour scheme of the street. Private gardens are consolidated into a shared collective garden, with each home retaining its own protected outdoor space. Existing trees define the placement of the new volumes, which are positioned as compact barn-like structures within the greenery. The result strengthens both ecological value and social cohesion without erasing the neighbourhood's identity.
Across both phases, 3,500 m² of wall surface is constructed using EcoCocon straw panels — supplied through our partner Strotec — with 1,742 m² delivered in the first phase. At this scale, Rustenburgstraat is one of the largest bio-based social housing projects in the Netherlands, and a clear demonstration that straw panel construction is ready for replication across the sector.
The project is delivered in two phases: Phase 1 was completed in February 2026, and Phase 2 is scheduled for early 2027.
