Most conversations about sustainable buildings start with the walls. At ETC Hyllie, the world's tallest straw building, the team started somewhere else entirely: underground. This article covers how the project reduced foundation embodied carbon by approximately 70% through a combination of a lightweight bio-based superstructure, a low-cement concrete mix, and basalt fibre rebar replacing conventional steel. At EcoCocon, moisture protection isn’t an afterthought — it’s built into every step of our process, from the field where the straw is harvested to the finished building years later. Here’s how we make sure our straw panels stay dry, strong, and durable.

Our Lithuania production facility — EcoCocon UAB — has just unlocked a new level of sustainability. In October 2025, we installed a 50 kW solar power plant on the roof of our factory, ensuring that every straw panel produced here is powered by clean, renewable energy. This investment was made possible with support from the European Union for renewable energy development

Danish innovation in straw construction honoured. The Building Component Award 2025 was presented to Lars Keller, EcoCocon Denmark and Simon Ingvartsen, Henning Larsen Architects for their pioneering use of EcoCocon straw wall systems in Bestseller’s Logistic Center West in the Netherlands — the world’s largest building made with straw elements. 🌾
