The fully tested straw panels are certified to have a thermal resistance of 0.056 W/mK with a fabulous overall U-value of 0.110 W/m2K (R=9.3) including the 100mm of woodfibre board to the exterior. The thermal mass and slow phase shift (time until summer heat will manifest itself inside) will provide high summer comfort. As a comparison, the phase shift of straw and wood is 40 minutes/cm compared to 13 minutes/cm for EPS and 15minutes/cm for Mineral insulation - outperforming such conventional materials in maintaining stable and comfortable indoor temperatures.
We have developed a system that both achieves the level of air tightness demanded by the passive house standard and yet keeps the wall completely vapour permeable. Because the wall system allows vapour to escape through to the outside (so called "breathing walls"), the system has designed out the possibility of damp in the walls, which is a major problem in modern, 'sealed' interiors. The airtight, vapour permeable system also creates a draught free and healthy indoor climate. Clay plaster, with its humidity regulation properties, can be applied directly to the straw panel surface.
An EcoCocon house is made up of healthy, natural materials, with no artificial or polluting additives and so does not of itself create harmful toxins. However, in an indoor, closed environment most contemporary items like furniture, clothes, electronics & plastics will off-gas harmful substances. Clay has been known for thousands of years to remove toxins from the atmosphere, nevertheless we recommend installing an optional ventilation system - active or passive.
Clay plaster is a very effective humidity regulator, which is very important for human health. Clay absorbs excess humidity in areas such as kitchens and bathrooms and also releases humidity if the surrounding air is too dry. This effectively deals with issues such as condensation and toxic mold growth - neither of which will be found in clay plastered, vapour permeable EcoCocon houses. The well insulated walls will also minimise temperature differences between surfaces and the indoor air, ensuring no cold spots or draughts.
During their growth cycle both straw and wood transform CO2 into stored carbon - a process called sequestration. Each square metre (m2) of EcoCocon wall surface area stores approximately 75kg of sequestered CO2. A small house will therefore store around 10 tonnes of CO2, and rather than being a liability to the environment (as almost all contemporary construction techniques are), it instead becomes a carbon asset to the environment for the lifespan of that building. Transportation has a negligable effect on this equation.
The extraordinary insulation in the passive house quality of the walls will further reduce your carbon footprint because of the greatly reduced heating and cooling demand. A typical EcoCocon house will save approx. 1 tonne of CO2 per year on energy demand, compared to a standard house. This translates to huge CO2 savings over the lifetime of the building, whilst increasing your comfort. So you can have your cake and eat it too!
With this accessible and adaptable modular building system, the architect has total freedom of design. The modular panels come in a range of standard widths from 400mm to 1200mm and a range of standard heights from 400mm to 3000mm. Assembling the modules on site is very fast. We deliver clearly numbered and colour coded panels to site together with a panellised 'map' for easy location of panels. See the download section where the assembly procedure is explained. No expensive specialist tools are required, only standard tools and screws are needed for assembly. You can practically do it yourself!
The structural integrity of the panel is achieved by the integrated timber frame construction designed to avoid thermal bridging. We provide loading calculations so your design can be easily and quickly calculated by your structural engineer. The compressed but flexible straw can take high loads without losing its integrity, even in extreme cases such as earthquakes.

The cost of walls is generally a relatively small percentage of the overall costs of a house build, usually around 15%-20%. However, with the Eococon panel system, you need no freestanding frame nor wall insulation - the panels themselves comprise frame and insulation in one. It is usual for a team of three people to assemble 60-80m2 of wall per day. Like a 3D jigsaw, colour coded and numbered panel elements make assembly a breeze! The work can be done by carpenters and any builder used to working with timber construction. A complete assembly guide is available in the download section.
Small detailing, such as how the employment of the airtight membrane doubles up as weather protection during construction (nice!) and how the flat and uniform surface of the straw (very nice!) speeds up clay plaster application, making this system a pleasure to work with for builders, professional trades and craftsfolk alike.

Much larger buildings with EcoCocon panels are on the near horizon, and we are currently working with several concepts. Some large pilot projects are already in development and we're excited to support these and to continue to work in partnership across the whole of Europe to demonstrate panel use as a universally applicable system for large buildings and developments.
Continued rationalisation of the production process and increased mechanisation will enable the introduction of production directly into partner countries, offering local manufacture whilst retaining our commitment to affordable costs. As demand for panel production continues to increase, there is more and more scope to make the panel system ever more cost effective in the future.
